Book A Corporate Wellness Package Now
More companies are starting work site wellness programs as a way of controlling high healthcare costs. According to a MetLife study, 37% employers of smaller companies and 61% of companies with more than 500 employees now offer wellness programs. The primary priorities include:
- curtailing health costs
- retain good workers
- attract good employees
- reduce absenteeism
- improve employee productivity, morale and safety
Return on Investment (ROI)
Researchers from Harvard University found that medical costs fall about $3.27 for every dollar spent on wellness programs and that absenteeism costs fall about $2.73 for every dollar spent. Holding annuals fairs, hosting occasional health classes or providing printed health information without follow-up are usually not enough by themselves to generate change and keep health care costs from rising. To show savings from a wellness program, it is essential for a company to provide a well-run program with comprehensive and effective interventions.
How Much Should You Budget?
Various sources share slightly different cost points per employee if you expect good savings and a positive ROI. Those costs can run from $150-450 per employee plus our health insurance premiums and wellness program incentives. The good news, for small businesses (fewer than 100 employees), the Affordable Care Act, enacted March 23, 2010, provides you access to wellness grants to help establish new work site wellness programs. $200 million in grant funding can be approved by Congress through the appropriations process and then the grants become available through the Secretary of Health and Human Services. There are eligibility requirements. For more information on this and the grant funding read Wellness Program Costs.
